Listening to Patti Smith Horses on the record player tonight. Recently read Just Kids, Smith's memoir of her relationship with Robert Mapplethorpe in the late 60s and early 70s. The most honest and tender ode to love and friendship.

nan goldin + erin wasson = heaven on earth

I discovered Nan Goldin my freshman year of college. Her raw, honest, sometimes shocking and painful photos immediately took hold of me. Most recently, she collaborated with model, muse and designer Erin Wasson to create the stunning images for Melbourne based brand Scanlan & Theodore. The label's creative director, Gary Theodore, is known for his work with unusual and controversial artists, and Goldin is no exception. What a refreshing voice to add to the fashion world.

Last night I was fortunate to experience the double-threat that was Sonic Youth and Pavement at the Hollywood Bowl. Once again, Kim Gordon blew my mind with how utterly and unbelievably cool she is. Musician, visual artist, fashion designer, furniture designer & carpenter, wife, mother...it is overwhelming and inspiring all at once. This one goes out to the queen of all rock and roll...or queen of all things in the universe, actually.

back to purity, back to simplicity

Dieter Rams will never cease to inspire me. His influence can clearly be felt decades after he created some of the most most beautiful and interesting industrial design for Braun and Vitsœ, most notably in the work of Jonathan Ive at Apple. Dieter Rams' Ten Principles for Good Design was written when he was concerned about the state of the world around him, which had become "an impenetrable confusion of forms, colours and noises." This fear, and these ideas, are so pertinent today.

1. Good design is innovative

2. Good design makes a product useful

3. Good design is aesthetic

4. Good design makes a product understandable

5. Good design is unobtrusive

6. Good design is honest

7. Good design is long-lasting

8. Good design is thorough, down to the last detail

9. Good design is environmentally-friendly

10. Good design is as little design as possible

The Selby is one of my favorite blogs eveerrrrrr. Love love love interiors. I can't wait for the day when I settle down in one place and can really transform a space to make it completely mine. In the meantime, I'll just have to flip through the pages of The Selby Is In Your Place and lust after the incredible living spaces of Erin Wasson, Lou Doillon and Karl Lagerfeld, just to name a few.

Considering it finally feels like summer in Los Angeles, I am definitely not ready to even think about fall. These images from the Wilfred FW10 collection at least make the transition a little easier to bear. I can't get enough of the soft watercolor backgrounds and neutral color palette.

Over the weekend I watched Objectified, the industrial design documentary from the brilliant filmmakers behind Helvetica. Whenever I watch films like this I get newly inspired and excited about being a designer. Here's one of the excerpts from the film that really resonated with me, but I highly recommend that you go out and watch it yourself!

"A big definition of who you are as a designer, it's the way that you look at the world. It's one of the curses of what you do, is that you're constantly looking at something and thinking 'Why is it like that and not like this?' and so in that sense, you're constantly designing." -Jonathan Ive, Sr. VP Industrial Design, Apple
